Places to visit

Šiauliai is waiting for all: both townspeople and visitors. Each city has its own history, unique landmarks and special places of interest. Traces of the past of the Sun city and today’s reflections have created a peculiar history of the city of Šiauliai, which is reflected in numerous monographs and photo albums. The city is abundant in places of interest, which are worth seeing, staying and returning many times again. You are welcome at the museums, churches, historical landmarks as well as small architecture on the boulevard and other places of interest, surrounded by myths and colourful stories.

Approaching the city, from far away you are greeted by St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral – the most striking piece of Renaissance Mannerism architecture in Lithuania. You will see one of the oldest sundials on the wall of this building, which has survived in our country until now. In the Sundial Square you will see one of the main dominants of the city – ‘Šaulys’ (‘The Archer’). This gilded sculpture, almost four meters high, which is also called ‘The Golden Boy’, and metal numbers 12, 3 and 6, infused in the pavement of the square, signifying hours, combine three most important symbols of Šiauliai city: the Sun, giving a sense to the Battle of the Sun, which took place in the territory of the city, the archer, associated with the origin of the name of the city, and time that has passed since the day when the name of the city was mentioned for the first time.

Not far, on Talkša lake shore, stands ‘The Iron Fox’, which is included in the Lithuanian Guinness Book of Records as the largest animal sculpture. The building of the early twentieth century – Chaim Frenkel villa – offers visitors to go back to the past, visiting stylized expositions ‘Provincial Manor and the City’, ‘Jewish Cultural Heritage in Šiauliai: Merchants the Frekeliai’. The villa also operates one of the few expositions for people with visual impairments and the blind in Lithuania ‘Things that Speak’. Visiting unique Lithuanian Bicycle museum and Cats museum, you will both admire the abundance of various exhibits and hear interesting stories.

There are many places of interest and landmarks in Šiauliai region too, the stories of which date back to old times and arouse a variety of interpretations. Manors, smaller properties, mounds, old mills, museums and other places of interest – mirages of the past and present of Šiauliai region – will surprise by various historical facts and images. The Hill of Crosses, situated in Šiauliai district, is a unique sacred place, which is visited by thousands of tourists every year. It has been counted that there are about 100 thousand crosses from all over the world. Kurtuvėnai town is decorated with the authentically restored manor complex and unique wooden barn representing the eighteenth-century Baroque style. Naisiai settlement is famous not only for its beautiful landscapes and annual cultural events but also for the unique Lithuanian museum of Balts’ gods. Places of interest in the city of Šiauliai and in Šiauliai region will satisfy everyone’s curiosity, while unexpected stories and good emotions will ensure having a good time here.
